Tips For Job Searching

December 7, 2012 by Connie 1 Comment

What do you focus on when you’re applying for a job?  Do you consider what your perspective employer is looking for?  The following are a few points to keep in mind as you work through the job application process:

  • Leave pessimism at the door – Members of the selection committee can sense a defeatist attitude.  Show the board that you are confident and able to take on the challenge of a new job.
  • Be enthusiastic – When you demonstrate to the hiring board that you are enthusiastic about the position, it generates an excitement that resonates with the board.
  • Be accountable – Your success is yours to own.  Don’t rely on other people to find you a job.  You alone are responsible for finding an opportunity and going for it.
  • Focus your search – Know what your skills and passions are, and tailor your search in areas that you will be successful.
  • Be more than a resume – A resume can simply be a document highlighting experience and education.  However, try and capture something about you.  Something that will stand out to the hiring board and make them want to learn more about you.
  • Make a lasting impression – In many cases, you will be competing for a job against a large number of very qualified candidates.  You have to make sure that you are the one they remember.  Be prepared, learn as much as you can about the company and the position, and show them that you are the right fit for the position.

Preparation is one of the key aspects in being successful in the job application process. Understand what a tech graduate scheme may look like in order to make informed decisions about your career path, identify the skills and experiences you can gain, and evaluate which schemes align best with your interests and career goals. Target your search in areas for which you are qualified, and ensure that your resume and cover letter catch the attention of the hiring board.  Work on enhancing your interview skills.  Don’t be afraid to seek help in any of those areas, either through school counsellors, friends who have recently gone through the experience, or with a Career Coach who specializes in this area.
