New Year – New Career?

January 8, 2014 by Connie Leave a Comment

It’s a new year.  Is it time for a new Career?  How do you know when it’s time for a change?  Or maybe you are forced into a change because of a recent layoff.  Regardless of the situation, there’s nothing like the start of a new year to re-evaluate where you are and what you’re doing.

The first thing to do is to make sure you understand the reasons for any anticipated change.  If the reasons are a forced change, like a layoff, then take this opportunity to turn it into something positive.  As I have said in previous posts, if you have to take a job to pay the bills, that’s ok.  It doesn’t have to be the last job.  Take advantage of the opportunity to really explore what you want to do.  And find ways to work towards that as an end goal.

If you are just simply not fulfilled in your current job, again, take the time to decide what it is you really want.  If your passions are taking you in one direction, and your job has you going in another, then see if you can find a way to bring the two together.

But, remember, there are always the practical factors to consider.  Maybe your passions don’t translate into a secure, bill paying job.  And maybe you just aren’t the type of person who can live with insecurity in their career to allow you to follow that particular dream.  That’s ok.  There are a number of ways to feed your passion and still remain secure in a job that can be meaningful.

The secret is to find the balance that is right for you.  And what’s right for you is not going to necessarily be right for the next person.  Any career change has to be about you.  Don’t be afraid to reach out to family and friends, or even a Professional Career Coach, to help you through this decision-making process.

Do you know someone who is currently challenged with a career change decision? Feel free to share this post by using the share links at the top of this page. Also, if you’d like more career change assistance, feel free to check out the career coaching resource page.
