One of the most frequently asked questions I get when from a client who is preparing for an interview is, “Should I ask questions at a job interview?”
The Interviewers usually will explain the format of the interview before it begins, i.e. it’s a situational type interview, it’s very casual, etc.
Often times, they will invite you to ask clarifying questions or to have something repeated during the interview. If they invite you to do this, then by all means, feel free to do so. However, try and ask the questions at times when you are not interfering with the flow of the interview.
As well, the Board may ask you if you have any questions once the interview is finished. Be prepared for this and have questions ready ahead of time.
- Do some research on the company, and ask questions that are relevant to the position for which you are interviewing.
- Keep them specific to the organization and the job.
- Avoid questions about salary unless they initiate that conversation.
- A closing question about the time line of the process and the expected time for hire is a good way to close the interview.
Interviews can be very challenging and quite intimidating. There are no hard and fast rules as to what are correct questions at a job interview. Don’t be afraid to get help with the preparation by working with an experienced interviewer, interviewee or a Career Coach to ensure that you are confident and ready.
