Is It Too Late To Start a New Career?

April 22, 2013 by Connie Leave a Comment

Are you looking at a career change later in life?  There is no doubt that everyone, from time to time, questions whether or not they are in the right job.  Is it rewarding enough?  Are you using your natural skills and abilities?  Changing careers after ten or more years can be a very daunting experience.  But, for the right motivation, it can also be very rewarding.

However, how much of a change can really be made later in life?  Needless to say, some career changes are more reachable than others.  It might be pretty difficult to decide to become a doctor at age 50.  But does that mean that you can’t make a more realistic change?  Not at all.  We are never too old to learn something new.

If you are considering switching careers later in life, you must first understand why you are seeking a change.   What is the motivation?  Are you unhappy with your current employer or unhappy with the job that you are doing?  Are you looking for more challenge?  More responsibility?  Answering these and other questions will help you identify what direction you should consider exploring, for example:

  •  What education/credentials will I require for the desired career?
  • Does my current resume highlight transferable skills that can be carried forward?
  • Is there someone in the field I can speak with to learn more about the career?
  • Is there an avenue in which I can network to perhaps get my foot in the door?
  • Can I volunteer in the industry to gain more insight into the requirements and gain valuable experience?
  • Do I have the financial resources to change careers and perhaps be required to take a reduction in salary?
  • Do I have the physical and emotional characteristics at this stage in my life to compete in this field?

Once you have considered these and other important questions, and you decide you can manage the challenges that will come with this new career, then you should go for it.

If you are still not sure if a change is truly what you need, don’t be afraid to seek the assistance of a Career Coach, to help you sort through the questions and uncover the real answers.  Life is too short and we need to follow our dreams.  So go for it.
